Waimea Canyon

On our second day in Kauai, Corey and I drove to Waimea Canyon. Waimea Canyon is on the West Shore of the island and it is called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Driving up to the top of the canyon was very difficult for me. I do not have the steadiest stomach and the hairpin turns and winding road were a challenge. We pulled over so I could regroup and gain my bearings several times. The destination was worth the journey. Neither Corey or I have seen the Grand Canyon, so we cannot compare, but Waimea Canyon was breathtaking. The canyon is 3,500 feet deep, 1 mile wide and 10 miles long. Not one picture taken does it justice. I hesitate putting any pictures up because they simply do not show the canyon as we remember it! Corey and I went on several shorter hiking trails along the canyon rim. This proved to be the best way to see the canyon because at the lookouts, there were too many people. No one seemed interested in viewing the canyon from the hiking trails- they were completely deserted, sans Corey and I. It was a very special day to spend together.
